You live inside a rare piece of geography. The Woodlands of Northville sits less than a mile south of Maybury State Park's 944 acres and under two miles from Town Square. That means your fall runs on two different calendars at once, the wooded one and the festival one, and they overlap for about ten weeks between Labor Day and the tree lighting. Most Metro Detroit subdivisions get one or the other. You get both, on foot or a five-minute drive, and this year the programming density downtown is heavier than it has been in a decade.
Here is what to actually put on the calendar, where to eat between stops, and how to think about pacing the season so you are not driving past your own front yard on a Saturday wondering what to do.
The Skeleton Math
October in the 'Ville is the anchor. The Northville Downtown Development Authority has confirmed that Skeletons Are Alive 2026 launches Friday, October 2, with the full display running through October 31. This is not a decoration. It is more than 200 life-sized skeleton vignettes staged block by block through downtown, styled and placed by Begonia Brothers, from Main to Center to the side streets around Town Square. If you have been away from Northville for a few Octobers, the count has climbed year over year, and the staging has moved from novelty toward set piece.
A few practical notes for residents:
- The Friday launch night draws the largest crowd of the month. If your goal is photos with the vignettes, go on a weekday evening after dinner. The skeletons stay lit through October 31.
- The Marquis Theatre and Town Square anchor the densest cluster. Park north of Main and walk south.
- Bring the out-of-town relatives here in mid-October rather than dragging them to Frankenmuth. The drive time from your driveway is roughly seven minutes.
Thursday Mornings, Through October 30
The Northville Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 8 AM to 2 PM at 550 W. Seven Mile Road through October 30. From The Woodlands, that is a five-minute drive or a reasonable bike ride if you take the residential grid.
The market matters more in fall than in summer, and this is the part locals underuse. Michigan's fall growing window is short. The apple varieties that show up in September through mid-October (Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Mutsu, Empire) rotate out fast. Cider, squash, and late-season tomatoes stack the tables in a way that July never does. If you are the household that buys grocery-store apples in October, you are paying a premium for something worse than what is sitting a mile from your kitchen.
Thursday works well as a stacked errand. Market at 9, coffee downtown, home by 11.
A Walkable Dinner Rotation
You have more downtown restaurant depth within a two-mile radius than most Oakland County subdivisions do. The question is not where to eat. It is how to rotate so you are not defaulting to the same booth for the fourth Saturday in a row.

If you have not been to Genitti's in a while, the format is worth remembering. It is a set dinner theater, not a walk-in, and the fall and holiday shows book earlier than you think.
One Mile North, A Different October
Maybury State Park is not a stroller destination in October. It is a full afternoon.
The park is 944 acres according to Michigan DNR, and the terrain rotates through several ecosystems inside a single loop. Paved biking, unpaved hiking, equestrian trails, and a fishing lake all sit on the same footprint. Maybury Riding Stables offers horseback rides through the park, which is one of the few places in Wayne or Oakland County you can do that. If you have children in the house, Maybury Farm does demonstrations on animals, sheep shearing, and dairy work through the fall.
A few underused ideas:
The paved trail through Maybury is one of the flattest, most canopy-covered rides in the county. Fall color peaks here in the third week of October in a typical year. If you own a bike and it is sitting in the garage, this is the two weeks to use it.
Cass Benton Park sits about three and a half miles west and holds an 18-hole disc golf course on hilly, heavily wooded terrain. If you have someone in the household who wants a fall project, this is a low-cost one: a starter disc set runs under $30, and the course is free.
Mark These Dates
The programming clusters. If you want to plan the season in one sitting rather than checking the DDA site every Sunday night, block these:
- Saturday, September 28, 3 to 7 PM. Gather Northville's downtown scavenger hunt. Ticketed, all ages with adult supervision, and proceeds benefit the Northville Rotary Club. A useful way to see corners of downtown you walk past every week.
- Thursdays, through October 30. Farmers Market at 550 W. Seven Mile, 8 AM to 2 PM.
- Friday, October 2. Skeletons Are Alive launch. Music, dance, and Town Square activity from early evening.
- All of October. More than 200 skeleton vignettes downtown, free, self-guided, no ticket required.
- Late fall. Chili'in the Ville, the annual chili competition that pits city and township fire departments against local restaurants. Sample tickets are sold in sets of eight and picked up at Mod Market on Mary Alexander Court. The 2026 lineup includes 160 Main, Browndog Barlor, Center Street Grill, Exchange Bar & Grill, Genitti's, Great White Buffalo Brewing Company, LeGeorge, Los Tres Amigos, Lucy & The Wolf, Marquis Theatre, Northville Sports Den, Simply Wine, Table 5, The Garage Grill & Fuel Bar, and Toria.
- Late November. The Holiday Lighted Parade steps off at 6 PM and is followed by the official tree lighting in Town Square. This is the moment the season pivots from fall to holiday, and it is worth walking to rather than driving.
The Case For Walking Downtown Once A Week
Woodlands homes were built by Pulte in the early 2000s on treed cul-de-sac lots, and the interior of the subdivision is quiet in a way that can make downtown feel farther than it is. It is not. From most streets in the neighborhood, Main Street is a five to eight minute drive, and there is on-street parking north of the DDA blocks that turns over quickly on weekday evenings.
The reason to make downtown a weekly stop in fall, rather than a monthly one, is that the Music in the Ville concert series stacks Thursday acoustic sets on Center Street, Friday acoustics in Old Church Square, and Big Bands in Town Square through September. Combined with Tunes on Tuesday from Parks and Rec and Dancing in the Ville on Wednesdays, there is live music downtown on more nights in September than most residents realize. The window closes in early October when the temperature drops.
If you have not walked past the Northville Art House or through Mill Race Village in the last year, the fall lighting there is worth the ten-minute detour.
What This Adds Up To
The reason people pay a premium to live where you live is not any single feature. It is the compression. A national park-scale nature preserve, a 150-year-old walkable downtown, a top-ranked school district, and a restaurant density that outperforms towns twice this size, all inside a two-mile radius of your driveway. Fall is when that compression pays off hardest, because every asset is running at once. October in the 'Ville, Maybury color, Thursday market, Friday music, and a dinner rotation that does not repeat.
The residents who use it are the ones who plan two nights and one afternoon a week around it. The rest drive past the exit on I-275 and eat at a chain.
